Coppers

Copper symbolised great wealth and prestige for the owner and was an integral part of ceremonial life. It was used at Potlatches and was also used as currency. It was believed to have magical properties that affected human health as well as symbolising light, salmon and other elements basic to life. The Copper often had the owner’s crest on it.

The Sun is identified with its long rays and usually has the face of the hawk with its recurved beak touching its mouth. The Sun Chief is the provider of healing energy and life, put into the sky by Raven. The rays are means of our travel between earth and sky.

The Thunderbird is recognised by its large recurved beak and horn on top of its head which symbolised the Supernatural. Thunderbird was the most powerful of the spirits. Its wings caused thunder and lightning flashed from his eyes. During a storm the Thunderbird scoops up the Killer Whale. The Elders say the bones of Killer Whales have been found on mountain tops, left there by the Great Thunderbird.
